20 meter experiment

Bananarama commission

2020

20 meter mission

Commissioned for 40th year anniversary launch for Bananarama

These prints were commissioned during the lock down and so they were done all by hand in my back garden.

I used the techniques that I have been developing over the years to create texture using manipulated Screen’s.

Manipulation is the process by which I change the natural appearance of the screens so if they normally appear as a woven grid in their natural state. I change their structure by a series of experimental techniques like rubbing different pastes, resists, solubles, powders and so into the screen to create different marks, tones, shapes and shades.

In doing this it then releases an interesting print on to the fabric that is unique, textural and has its own identity.

The brief

These large scale pieces were created to add dimension to the backdrop of a shoot. Working with Binder and Pigment for this specific Project as these mediums have a thicker character so have more dimensional value and sits on top of the fabric rather than in the fabric which adds an interesting tone to the space.

The sense of dimension for this conceptual idea was important to begin to highlight dimensional space and the exploration of expanding space. To explore the ideas of space not being linear but a concept that can change and be adapted based on what is presented within it. For example, when you begin to add texture into the space, it naturally expands because texture has depth and many dimensions within one stroke, mark or surface area.

challenges

This was an interesting project because I have never worked on such a large scale, producing two 10 meter prints.

It was interesting because each mark was unique, each part was done by hand so all of the work has a very personal connection and is unique to the moment it was made it.

The main difficulty was blending the entire piece as it is very large and I had to do it part by part. But in each stage I learnt better how to improve and by the end I feel that the pieces were really resolved, unique and beautiful.

large scale commissions

I would definitely take on more large scale commissions. I really enjoy the process of working large scale and discovering through making.

I find I learn the most when I am put in difficult positions and have to adapt to the time and space but with this learning comes new possibilities and ideas.

To expand on this I would like to continue to make more large scale works, considering more dynamic aspects like shape, form and colour.

I do however always love to work with texture in its pure form and it was a joy to be able to explore texture in such a free and unique way for this project.
