The Birth of Gentle Beings a collection of 9 Prints shot in Dungeness exploring the Emotion and Physicality of Material in Time
Every material has an authentic character, an active presence, a capacity for change, to be altered and caught in a state of impermanence in relation to its physicality. This entitles it to be considered a being.
A gentle being resolves a state of harmony. Its tender temperament moves through space without disruption or force, existing along a current that yields to purify light. Exposing layers, textures and dimensionality with delicacy, revealing the truth of its characteristics.
These pieces express how material can have an inherent connection to nature. Looking at how materials react to and represent natural forms. Questioning the partitions between animate and inanimate objects. The relationship between material and nature as part of one living manifested structure.
Using techniques to transfer an abstract expression of nature into print and creating a dialogue between the pieces. Developing a method that creates aggressively layered textures on soft silk fabrics to lighten the tone of the expression. The juxtaposition between harsh surface treatment and the delicacy in the fabric producing outcomes that represent the idea of blending two opposing ideas, to make something weighted, seem light.
The argument between control and lack of control in the print process as well as this contradiction in our external world has tied together when placing the prints in a natural environment to see how they behave. Allowing the witness of The Birth Of Gentle Beings.
